Reports To: ICU Head Nurse / Critical Care Manager
Job Overview:
The ICU Nurse is responsible for providing specialized nursing care to critically ill patients in the Intensive Care Unit. This role involves continuous monitoring, assessment, and intervention to ensure optimal patient outcomes. The ICU Nurse works closely with physicians, other nurses, and allied healthcare staff to deliver high-quality, evidence-based care in a fast-paced and high-pressure environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Patient Care:
- Monitor vital signs, oxygenation, and hemodynamic status of ICU patients.
- Administer medications, intravenous fluids, and blood products as prescribed.
- Assist in ventilator management, dialysis, and other life-support measures.
- Perform regular assessments and document patient progress.
- Critical Interventions:
- Respond promptly to emergencies such as cardiac arrest, respiratory failure, or sudden deterioration.
- Implement life-saving interventions and protocols.
- Collaborate with the ICU team to adjust treatment plans based on patient response.
- Communication & Documentation:
- Maintain accurate and detailed patient records.
- Communicate effectively with doctors, families, and other healthcare providers.
- Educate patients’ families about conditions, treatment plans, and post-ICU care.
- Team Collaboration & Training:
- Mentor junior nurses and support staff in ICU procedures.
- Participate in continuous education and in-service training programs.
- Follow hospital policies, infection control protocols, and safety standards.
Qualifications:
- Education: Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSc Nursing preferred).
- Certification: Registered Nurse (RN) license; Critical Care Nursing certification preferred (CCRN).
- Experience: Minimum 1–3 years in ICU or critical care settings.
Skills & Competencies:
- Strong clinical knowledge of critical care nursing.
- Ability to operate ICU equipment (ventilators, monitors, infusion pumps).
- Quick decision-making and problem-solving skills in high-pressure situations.
- Excellent communication, teamwork, and interpersonal skills.
- Attention to detail, compassion, and patience.
Work Environment:
- ICU nurses work in a 24/7 critical care environment with rotating shifts.
- Exposure to high-stress situations, emergencies, and sometimes emotionally challenging scenarios.
- Requires physical stamina, alertness, and resilience.
